Bakersfield's only personally vetted contractor directory.

The Story

I built TradeShield because I was tired of guessing.

For over 30 years, I've been in construction. I started as a framing carpenter, worked my way up to project manager, and eventually ran my own contracting business. I've been on both sides of the table — the guy trying to win work, and the homeowner trying to figure out who to trust.

Here's what I kept seeing: good contractors getting undercut by guys with no license, no insurance, and no accountability. Meanwhile, homeowners were making $20,000 decisions based on a Google search and a prayer. Big listing sites didn't help — they just put everyone in the same bucket and called it done.

Those platforms don't care who gets hired. They have no skin in the game. I'm in Bakersfield. I know the local market. And I decided to do something about it.

The Problem

Hiring a contractor is one of the most stressful decisions a property owner makes.

Most directories list anyone with a pulse and a business license. They profit from the listing, not from the outcome. When something goes wrong — a bad install, a contractor who ghosts mid-job, a license that turns out to be expired — those platforms are nowhere to be found.

You deserve to know who you're hiring before you sign anything. And you shouldn't have to spend 20 hours doing your own detective work to get there.

I wanted to build something I and my neighbors could actually trust. Not a directory for the sake of it — a resource that actually solves the information gap.

What Makes TradeShield Different

Personal vetting. Not an algorithm.

Every contractor on TradeShield goes through my approval process. I'm not just checking for a pulse — I'm verifying licenses with CSLB, confirming insurance coverage, talking to references, and evaluating the quality of their work. If they don't meet the standard, they don't get listed.

Here's what TradeShield is built around:

  • Small contractors only. 1–5 person teams. These are the guys who care about their reputation because they live and work in the same community you do. Not fly-by-night operators who disappear when the job gets hard.
  • Bakersfield and Kern County first. We're not trying to be Angi or Thumbtack. We're focused on this market — local contractors, local vetting, local knowledge.
  • B2B subcontractor layer. Contractors finding other contractors — the side of the market that big platforms completely ignore. If you're a plumber who needs a reliable drywall crew, or a GC who needs a licensed electrician, TradeShield has you covered.
  • Hammer Awards. Contractors who consistently deliver quality work earn recognition they can display on their trucks. It's visible to property owners — and it's not bought, it's earned.
